Should Scott Get The Florida "Empty Chair Award?"

Post # 343, Bob McKnight's Florida Commentary

Apparently, Senator Scott does not feel you should hear his position on the issues critical to Floridians. He gets the Florida "Empty Chair Award" for 2024.

Florida's Junior Senator is Rick Scott. He previously served as governor of the Sunshine State but without strong support in the ballot box. He carries a lot of political baggage from felony crime charges by the Federal Government, to raiding public school budgets, to adding to the pollution of Okeechobee, and most recently to proposing to eliminate or reduce Medicare/Medicaid and Social Security. He favors eliminating a woman's determination for her body and granting that live-affecting decision to the government. His vast sums of personal money are the only reason he has stayed in office...barely.

So it is to the surprise of many that the Junior Senator would propose to run for Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate. He has been a loyal supporter of former President Donald Trump endorsing Trump's thousands of lies and misrepresentations. That should get Scott into the discussion of the favorites for the Leadership position. But Scott is running behind the veteran John Thune of South Dakota and Dr. John Barrasso of Wyoming who are particularly popular among the senior members of the GOP. Scott is said to be among the least-liked Senators along with his good friend Senator Ted Cruz of Texas.

As pointed out in this column, Scott is unsure about keeping his Senate seat. Several Democrats ran for the Democratic nomination to face Scott in the fall. The winner to run against Scott will be former Miami Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, who has cornered the Hispanic, women, and pro-abortion vote. She is likely to pick up that support through the up ticket of Presidential candidate Kamala Harris, which shows the Scott-Mucarsel-Powell race to be very close now.

So if there ever was a time for a debate or debates between candidates, this is it. But no, Senator Scott wins this year's Empty Chair Award in Florida for refusing to debate the issues of the day with his opponent, former Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. Apparently Scott feels if he is challenged to defend his controversial positions outlined above, he will lose the election.

You may be right Senator but at least you win an award.
