Gov. Bush, Sen. Romney, Dr. Rice next?

Post # 341, Bob McKnight's Florida Commentary

Former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney says his decision to vote for Harris is because our Democracy is now at risk and he is an American before a Republican.

A large criticism of the Republican Party now comes from the "Reagan Republicans." They are conservatives who feel Donald Trump has stolen their party. But most of them cannot bring themselves to vote Democrat. They are inclined to hold their nose and vote for Trump and the GOP down-ballot.

But over the weekend, that mindset in the GOP broke--at least with one major player. Former Vice President in the Bush II administration Dick Cheney announced he was voting Democratic. He said his vote was for America first, a political party. He felt the future of our democracy was at risk, and if the Democrats were to win the election, he would work to move it in a strongly conservative direction.

Cheney's decision is so significant that now other major GOP leaders from the past like former Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, Senator Mitt Romney, and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, among others may be next. If that were to happen, a major chunk of Republican votes could be at serious risk for Donald Trump.

As expected, Trump has countered the Cheney announcement with attacks and insults. That is exactly what the Democrats hope and want.

This could be the final straw for Donald Trump.
